Curators Choice - Apothecary Bottles

At the Rural Life Museum at Normanby Hall Country Park, visitors can view a chemist’s shop with a wide range of beautiful glass bottles. These chemist’s bottles contained medicines, cleaning products and even poisons, all in common household use.

Poisons had many household uses, from killing pests to dying clothes. Bottles containing poisons were designed to look and feel different to other products, to prevent accidental use. Glass bottles containing poisons were blue and green with ridged surfaces.

In this video, Collections Assistant Social History Eveline van Breemen, takes a closer look at the Apothecary Bottles.
